I absolutely love kettlebells. I have two, one's 25 pounds and the other is 35 pounds. The lighter one is perfect for doing more challenging, one arm, overhead exercises, and the heavier is better for more isolated work on the lower body where you can get pretty heavy with the weight before you feel a significant muscle burn. I'd love to use the heavier one for the overhead stuff, but I just cannot manage proper form with it yet, I hope to get there one day though. Consistent practice will keep building strength, so I'm gonna keep moving forward. Try this awesome new intro kettlebell cardio workout with me and see how much fun it is...
Less than 10 minutes of:
5 burpees with pushup 20 kettlebell swings 6 side to side pushups 20 kettlebell swings 10 side crunches (each side) 20 kettlebell swings 10 jump lunges 20 kettlebell swings 10 v ups 20 kettlebell swings There's a lengthy breakdown at the beginning of how to do the kettlebell swing and modifications for those who can't or don't have a kettlebell. So try this out with me, it's just over 7 minutes and it's really fun. Note: Be careful if you're new to the swings, if you feel any stress in your lower back, you need to use a lighter weight, or take a break, and when you begin again make sure you're maintaining proper form through the movement. Your back should not be involved in powering the kettlebell forward, only your glutes and hips; if you feel any stress or pain in your lower back, do not continue through it. Be safe, always. Do a smaller number of reps to work up to these sets of 20 if you feel your back starting to compensate. Your body will adjust, just give it a little time. If you practice a few more reps each day, you will quickly notice a great difference in your strength. But just be smart, never ever power through pain. Take your time, I promise it won't take that long.
The kettlebell swing is a full body workout. It targets your glutes, hamstrings, abs, back, arms, and shoulders. And it's sneaky, it doesn't feel insanely difficult or make you horribly sore while you're doing it, it's just fun. Seriously. It's also a low impact, but high intensity exercise. I love using the kettlebell as often as possible in my workouts. There's so many unique and different exercises it can be used for that I just love to challenge myself with. If you're going to invest in any piece of exercise equipment, the kettlebell is the one I'd go with. I enjoy it and get so much more use out of it than my sets of dumbbells. Dumbbells have their place, but their use can be limited. Kettlebells are used in much more functional movements and exercises. They're also made of iron, which if taken care of, will last a lifetime, never needing to be replaced! They run for pretty reasonable prices on amazon, I got both my 25 and 35 pound ones here.
If anyone has an interest in more beginner/learning how to use/just starting out with the kettlebell, or more advanced kettlebell workouts, let me know and I can put some things together. But in the meantime I hope you'll try this out and let me know how you liked it.
